The National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) in Suratkal is one of the premier engineering colleges in India to have its own private beach. Awards and recognitions have been following this educational landmark for decades. Way back in 1991, it won the Government of Karnataka Award for Best College. In 1998, it was ranked 6th in the Top Engineering Colleges of India list of ‘India Today’ magazine. The institute offers undergraduate programmes (B.Tech) spread over eight semesters for Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical & Materials Engineering, and Mining Engineering.
The post graduate programmes are far more extensive and cover a range of specialities. You can do an M.Tech (four semesters) in Applied Mechanics and Hydraulics, Marine Structures, Remote Sensing and GIS, Water Resources Engineering and Management, Chemical Engineering, Chemical Plant Design, Industrial Pollution Control, Industrial Biotechnology, Construction Technology and Management, Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Power and Energy Systems, Computational Mathematics, Nanotechnology and so on. In addition, you can do an M.C.A (Master of Computer Applications), M.B.A. (Master of Business Administration), an M.Sc. in Chemistry, and an M.Sc. in Physics. And ofcourse, you can take up research in your choicest topics and obtain a Ph.D.
The institute has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (NOU) with a
number of Indian and foreign companies, including Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals, AMD India, Huawei Technologies, PepsiCo, IBM, ABB, L&T, Volvo, Bosch and so on. NITK even has a Career Development Centre that is a one-stop window for recruiters to liaise with the institute for internships and placements.
All B.Tech admissions are through the Joint Entrance Exam Main. For M. Tech and Ph.D, GATE/ NET scores are a must.
